Through a new project called Strengthening the Foundations of Early Literacy in Grenada, students in all government primary schools will have access to child-friendly libraries filled with age appropriate books. Teachers and school staff will be trained to implement effective reading strategies and activities in classrooms and libraries that not only build the foundational skills of reading, but also help cultivate a habit of reading in children. Through the training of local authors and illustrators, the project will also promote the development of children’s books locally that are culturally relevant and relatable, something which is currently in small supply here. This work will be led by Grenada Schools Inc, Room to Read (an international NGO), and the Ministry of Education.
